Graduates Sharing

This is WU Tian, a graduate of the MSc. OR&BS program, 2010-2011. I've been working as a research assistant in the Department of Education Studies, Hong Kong Baptist University since graduation. Mainly taking charge of data collection, management, and analysis, I think the program helps me a lot to meet all kinds of challenges in my current work. The knowledge of sampling survey, multivariate statistical analysis, and categorical data analysis guide me how to choose appropriate way to do analysis. And the experience of using SPSS and SAS enables me to extract useful information from dataset quickly. It not only provided me a chance to gain solid theoretical background of statistics but also show me the way of practicing real data analysis.

Thanks to all teachers' effort in this program. And wish everyone graduates/will graduate from this program has a promising future.

(Tian WU, MSC ORBS 10-11 class)

Hi I'm JIN Chenghua who graduated in MSc in Operational Research & Business Statistics in August 2011 at HKBU, now I am working as an Equity Analyst at one local capital management company. It's my pleasure to share some of my thoughts about this program with all of you who have interests. What can you get from this program? From my point of view, first up, you can get both theoretical and practical knowledge in Operational Research, Statistics, Finance and other statistical software like SPSS, SAS, which is helpful for your laying a solid basis for either your future career or further study for PHD. Secondly, you will get to know and be friends with those from different places with diversified background and can exchange opinions of each other, thirdly, teachers at this program are very excellent, you can go to their offices to talk about all kinds of topics with them during the office time, the last but not the least, you will get the opportunity to be as close as to the financial industry in Hong Kong as the international financial center if you study and work harder and smart, and keep in close touch with the job market once you start your study.

In a word, I know Michael and his colleagues do try to perfect this program as much as possible based on the ever changing environment and are working hard to commit themselves to achieving this great goal.

Sincerely wish you having an unforgettable study time in ORBS program at HKBU.

This is Lu Jin, earned the Master degree of operation research and business statistics from 2009 to 2010. Currently, I am working in the mutual fund as a quantiative investment & credit analyst. Thanks for this program, offering me a very solid statistic contents and programming experience. For your information, the Msc courses will require a significant amount of time for you to master the graduate level statistics concepts. Although everything in these statistics and optimatzation topics are very intensive, you must have a firm grasp of the time series analysis (Professor Michael's course), the multivariate statistics knowledge, optimization theory (Yuan xiao ming's course) and the arbitrage concept (Financial mathematics). Hope every Msc student will enjoy the course & will have a very good career path in the future.

I am thankful for the year spent in HKBU because the MSc program has proven to be useful in my work as a Business Analyst in a Hong Kong listed company. My daily work include industry research and analysing our position in the industry. The knowledge learned in the MSc program is practically applied in my work everyday as part of my daily routine. The lecturers and their lectures are conducted in a professional way while the library and the facilities in HKBU have provided a conducive study environment. So far, I have not regretted relocating myself from Singapore to Hong Kong.

The MSc ORBS program is a great experience exceeding initial expectations. The greatest motivator for recommending the program to others is the deep respect I have for the rigor of the academics on operations research and business statistics and for the down to earth skills on my future career. For me, getting a graduate level education that forced me to develop those quantitative skills are exactly in line with what the job market is looking for in 2010. I was building solid competence on quantitative analytics, such as, multivariate analysis, categorical data analysis, time series analysis, mathematical finance, and operations research, which helping me finally getting into one of the largest management consulting firms in world. Coming from a business administration undergraduate background, I thought it essential that I round out my personal profile with more quantitative analytics--to me, that is the double master of ORBS at HKBU and KENT.

Hi, my name is Zhao Nan from MSC ORSTAT 08-09. After graduation, I took an opportunity in Shanghai, worked in a MPF company for about one year. Then I realized that I love Hong Kong more than Shanghai, so I came back to HK, and now I'm working in KPMG as a fresh graduate. The master course help me with my mathematical skill and statistic knowledge, but most important of all, help me to set a view of the business which I didn't have. My undergraduate degree was pure mathematics, studying something from math knowledge is very nature to me, but from point of business view is a whole new experience. Thanks for Michael and Candy and all other teachers and my dear classmates, for the enjoyable one-year time in HKBU.

Hi, my name is ZHENG Jialiang. I am the graduate of ORBSTAT program 08-09. It is a great pleasure that Professor Ng do me the honor to have the chance to share my impression and experience. The reason why I chose this MSc program is that I hope it will lay a solid ground for my career both in knowledge and practical application respects and it is just do it right. First, this program can broaden vision in operational research and business statistics, which modern business and financial industry needs indeed. Theoretical courses help me to understand how a mathematical model work in practice and how to solve problems for business people. Second the course involving cutting-edge software discipline tells me the appliance of the model. In the coming RA/TA period in 09-10, my work benefited from the courses. Especially after that when I looked for financial positions, the knowledge I learned from this program helps me a lot in preparing and taking interviews and I did use models in my routine work. Thanks to this program.

(Jialiang ZHENG, MSC ORBS 08-09 class)

MSc program provides me a good chance to study operational research and statistics, especially for students, like me, who have different backgrounds rather than mathematics. In this program, you can learn lots of practical knowledge about statistical software which will be of great importance for your job-hunting in future. Also you will meet students from kinds of places and experience different cultures to help you be familiar with the new environment as soon as possible. Provided that you make great efforts on your study, you will get what you deserve and have big chance to get a job in Hong Kong or work in your dreamed field, data analysis, operations and finance, for example. What is more important, it gives you the opportunity to know Hong Kong and make yourself better prepared for further career development. If you want to have a career change compared to your precious major, this is also a good timing. Anyway, chances are what are prepared for people who are ready.

As an ORBS MSc graduate, I am very thankful for the two years I spent in the department. The study at HKBU was like sketching. I can still remember the first day I attended the first lesson in HKBU, filled with curiosity, energy, and expectation. Upon leaving for CUHK to do my PhD, I realized that my time in HKBU was wisely spent.

During my two years study, I was lucky to meet a group of nice classmates and professors in different research interests. The diversity of the programme also enriched my vision. I was exposed to a variety of courses including business model, project management, computational finance, and quantitative marketing. That really boosted my interest in quantitative area. In addition, I was able to receive much guidance from my advisor, Michael Ng, as well as other knowledgeable professors and many smart and friendly classmates. We often ate and chatted in the quiet and peaceful garden outside the classroom, or found in the fierce and long discussion in front of the whiteboard.

It is difficult to say how the experiences in this master programme have shaped me, but I am sure that studying ORBS MSc has made my life more fruitful and positive, given me the energy and power to pursue my career.

Hi I am BY XIA and I have graduated from this brilliant MSC program for more than 2 years. Now I am working as a corporate finance analyst with an established internet company. My job duty mainly includes fund raising, M&A activities and industry research and analysis. Thanks to the MSC program jointly held by HKBU and Kent U, I could lay a solid foundation in statistical and financial knowledge. It really exceeds my expectations, allowing me to rapidly improve myself and make me well prepared for a great career path. What impressed me is that faculties here really care about each student. They dedicate significant time to share with students about their wisdom in academic research and life experience, and they could always give customized suggestion to help the student to harvest more. Finally some little tips: Engage into Hong Kong and make friends with local people and foreigners. Work hard and play hard! Good luck.
