President's Report, AGM 2002

Follow up on last year's any other business item, Professor Cheng mentioned that there were discussions with the Hong Kong Education Department on the support measures for exceptionally gifted students. Finding students was an issue at that point.

Professor Cheng also remarked that there were a large number of conference and seminar activities compared to four years ago. HKMS will keep its continued support of local conferences.

More importantly, he pointed out in the coming reform of the secondary school curricula, there would be substantial changes. To reduce the number of examinations, the students will be offered four core subjects (Chinese, English, Math, Liberal Studies) plus two subjects. There were debates to have additional math as one of the two subjects, but nothing definite resulted in that direction. The concern was that in such reform the students would likely learn less mathematics. Possibly a form six student under such reform would know less math than a current form five student. Also, there may be less jobs for math teachers due to the decrease of math classes. He urged members to pay close attention to the development and participate in discussions whenever possible.
