INSTRUCTIONS FOR PRESENTATIONS
There will be over 120 presentations at MCQMC 2000. These instructions
are designed to help you communicate your new results.
- Watch your time. In order for the conference to run
smoothly all speakers must strictly adhere to the schedule.
Plenary talks are 50 minutes plus 5 minutes for discussion.
Special session talks are 25 minutes, plus 5 minutes for
discussion. Contributed talks are 17 minutes plus 3 minutes for
discussion. Plan what you have to say so that it fits the
allotted time.
- Don't get bogged down in the details. Given the short
time allowed for most talks, it is not possible to give full
details of your work. Rather you should try to explain clearly
your main results and their significance. Those who want to know
more will approach you afterwards to discuss your work.
- Cater to the diversity of the audience. The
participants at MCQMC 2000 come from a wide variety of
backgrounds, including mathematics, computer science, statistics,
finance, and physics. Many in the audience may not be familiar
with the subject of your talk, so provide sufficient background
for them.
- Theory and practice are both important. This
conference includes both theory and practice. Talks on
theoretical aspects should include remarks on how the results can
aid practitioners. Talks on applications should highlight
unresolved theoretical questions that have arisen.
- Make sure that the audience can see. The lecture halls where
the conference is being held can accommodate more than 100 people.
Prepare your transparencies, slides or computer demonstrations so
that they can be read from a distance of 15 meters away.
- What equipment do you need? Each lecture hall will
be equipped with two overhead projectors, a projector for
displaying computer output, and a whiteboard. If you have any
special requests for audio-visual equipment, please let us know in
advance.
- Are you giving a poster presentation? The poster
session will be held, 10:50am - 11:50am, on
Wednesday, November 29. Please put up your poster on Wednesday
morning, 8:30am - 9:00am. Posters
should be taken down on Thursday morning, November 30. The area
available for each poster is 4 × 3 = 12 portrait-oriented
A4 pages.
- Conference CD-ROM A CD-ROM will be prepared with a softcopy
of the conference program, abstracts, list of participants,
and style files for the proceedings. We can also include pdf files
of preprints or slides of your talk. These files
must be received by the end of Monday, November 27. To submit such files
either ftp to
ftp://ftp.math.hkbu.edu.hk/pub/incoming/MCQMC2000
or give us a floppy disk.
